WORSHIP MINISTERIES
Acolytes - Acolytes help the priest
during the services. This ministry
includes carrying torches, the cross, or
serving the altar as the Table is set for
Holy Communion. This ministry is open
to members of all ages.
(St. Martha’s) Altar Guild - Women and
men of the parish can serve as members.
Teams work together to prepare that altar
and sanctuary for all services. The guild
members meet the first Thursday of every
other month (except during the summer
months) with the rector and Altar Guild
Director for training, instruction, fellowship
and preparation for special occasions.
Choir – St. Peter’s Choir is a group of
people who enjoy worshipping through
singing under the direction of our
organist/choirmaster. This particular choir
is very fun-loving. Anyone is welcome.
So, don’t let anything keep you from
joining us. We don’t have choir during the
summer months. We do have choir
practice once per week from September
through May on Thursday evenings. The
choir traditionally hosts the annual St.
Peter’s Day Celebration and Talent
Show—fun and food for the whole family.
Layreader – These ministers read
the New Testament (Epistle) Lesson
during the service and also lead the
congregation in the psalm selected
for that Sunday. Layreaders must
be licensed.
Lector – This ministry does not
require special licensing. This
minister comes forward from the
congregation and reads the Old
Testament (First) Lesson from the
Bible. In addition to reading Holy
Scripture this person also leads
those gathered for worship in the
Prayers of the People.
Lay Eucharistic Ministry – Commonly known as
LEV’s. Persons called to this special ministry are
trained and granted a special license to represent
the corporate body of Christ and to take the
Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood to those
who are shut-in and unable to attend church on a
regular basis. Ministers are under the direction and
supervision of the rector and deacon.
Usher – Teams of two hand Sunday
service bulletins to those arriving for
worship. Ushers will pass the alms
basins to the congregation during the
offertory. It is at this time that we
return to God a portion of our
financial treasure. This is an act of
thanksgiving—us thanking God for
blessing us with abundance. “All
things come of thee, O Lord, and of
Thine own hath we given thee.”
Greeter – Teams of two people welcome “first-
timers” and “old-timers” as they enter the
church. This is a good way to get to know
others and begin building relationships. A vital
part of this ministry includes making our guests
feel welcome and steering them to someone
who will take them under their wing. These
persons also bring forward the food items
donated to Peter’s Pantry to be blessed during
the offertory. Our greeters also ask our guests
to fill out a brief information card and sign our
guest book.
Prayer Circle – As Christians we are called to be in dialogue with God and pray for our
needs and those of other’s. St. Peter’s has a large e-mail circle of prayer warriors who pray
daily for those who make their needs known. These people enjoy gathering on the 1st and
3rd Wednesdays of the month for evening worship and prayer.
