OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE

Peter’s Food Pantry – This is one of St.
Peter’s main outreach programs into the
community of East Tulsa . We believe it is a
vital part of the Church’s mission to provide
for those less fortunate than ourselves. Our
Pantry is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:
00 until 1:00 p.m. Our pantry is most often
stocked by gifts of food from members of St.
Peter’s. Many of our parishioners also
provide monetary gifts. Our church office
administrator usually handles all requests for
food. We would like to expand our hours of
operation. This may be a ministry for you.

Prison Ministry - St. Peter’s has an active Prison Ministry working primarily with the Turley Correctional Center
in North Tulsa. This facility houses an average of 140 women who are about to be released and face the challenges of
re-entry transition. Women can attend Sunday and special Holy Day services at St. Peter’s with transport provided
by three parishioners who are Department of Correction volunteers. Here the women are integrated into the worship
community with the hospitality of St. Peter’s making it a place of welcome and restoration.
The women also attend computer classes at the Turley facility that St. Peter’s initiated. Parishioners donated
computers that were refurbished by Tulsa Community College and classes are taught by a Tulsa Community College
volunteer. The women learn essential computer skills to enable them to have better jobs with higher pay and
benefits. In order to succeed in re-entry, they must have the skills needed in today’s workforce.
A St. Peter’s volunteer also teaches Women’s Health and Parenting classes to the women in the re-integration
program there. We have donated clothing for their ‘clothes closet’ – clothes to enable them to attend church,
interview for jobs, or wear to work -, pies for Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas gifts for the residents, and food and
beverages for their annual cook out.
We also participate in Kairos Prison Ministry (a multi-denominational 4 day weekend similar to Cursillo and Walk to
Emmaus) at Mabel Bassett Correctional Center in McLoud by providing 100+ dozen cookies for the residents
attending the retreat. Additionally we have Kairos volunteers who participate on weekend teams for Mabel Bassett
and Eddie Warrior Correctional Center (Taft, OK).
St. Peter’s recognizes the need for healing and reconciliation for those who are incarcerated and desires to help in
providing a safe and loving place to worship. There is a saying, “Today’s inmates are tomorrow’s neighbors”. Our
goal is to help make that transition easier by showing the light and love of Christ to our sisters who need and want a
second chance. Christ instructed all of us to love our neighbors as ourselves and this is one way we can live into that
great commandment.

The Contemplative Current ~Short Teachings from the Traditions~
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading for home.
Mary Oliver, Wild Geese
Father Glandon conducts a session in Contemplative Prayer every Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Church.
